Nestlé has partnered with the Red Cross in its work with local communities improving water and sanitation. The Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation programme is a global drive by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Ivorian Red Cross to raise awareness of the importance of latrines and hand washing, as well as create water management projects such as drilling boreholes and establishing pumps in villages where water is scarce. The outcomes are dramatically lower infant mortality rates and stomach infections from water-borne diseases, but also higher female literacy, a key driver for poverty reduction. Young girls, who used to walk many hours to collect water, now can spend more time in school.
