15th MILO Basketball Championship in Nigeria

Over 6,000 schools across Nigeria participated in the 15th edition of the Nestlé MILO Secondary Schools Basketball Championship, which ended on Saturday, July 6, 2013, in Lagos, Nigeria.
                
A key feature of 2013 championship is the introduction of a Top 50 camp, which was facilitated by NBA  coaches and scouts from the United States of America.

At the end of the keenly contested games, International School, University of Lagos, emerged champions. They received cash prizes to support sports development in the school in addition to a MILO trophy, medals, sports shoes and Nestlé products.

International School prevailed over St. Joseph Secondary School of Makurdi in Benue State, out-dunking them by 56 – 47 baskets in an exciting match followed nationally on DSTV Supersports.


In the girls’ event, defending champions, St. Jude’s Girls Secondary School from Bayelsa State triumphed over Government Secondary School, Gboko, Benue State by 26 – 18 points to retain the coveted trophy. 

Boluwasope Faniran of International School was named the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) for the boys’ category while Bridget Dibiya of St Jude’s Girls Secondary School claimed that honor in the girls’ group. 

The MVPs from all the regional conferences, together with the MVPs of the finals would participate in the Top 50 camp facilitated by NBA  coaches and scouts from the USA.

CWAR Business Executive Manager for Beverages, Daniel Yapobi, said MILO would continue to invest in initiatives that offer children the opportunity to develop positive skills by way of sports and other physical activities: 

“MILO is proud to encourage our children to enjoy the positive experiences and social values of sports and physical activity. The success of 15th MILO Basketball Championship, in Nigeria confirms our commitment to sustain this program over the years to come”.

Managing Director of Nestlé Nigeria Plc, Dharnesh Gordhon re-echoed the contribution of Nestlé MILO to the development of basketball in Nigeria. 

He said the organization of the annual championship has paved way for young basketball players to qualify for the national team, as well as other major basketball leagues across the globe.

President of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF), Malam Ibrahim Mohammad, expressed delight with the standard of this year’s competition and thanked Nestlé for assisting in the development of basketball in the country.

“Nestlé MILO has demonstrated their commitment in promoting basketball in the country and I call on other corporate bodies to follow suit”, he added.

As part of the event, gifted players were given the opportunity to showcase their skills in the ‘Slam Dunk’ segment of the contest, displaying high levels of creativity, showmanship and artistry to the delight of the crowd. 

The event was action packed with a special courtside performance from the energetic wave making Nigerian artiste, MayD, who delighted the audience with his popular tracks.

By successfully holding another successful championship, Nestlé MILO, the Energy Food Drink of Future Champions, is living up to its billing as the pacesetter for sports development in Nigeria.
