Lire en Français

There are over 199 million women living with diabetes, according to the International Diabetes Federation. This total is likely to increase to 313 million in 2040. Research has shown that up to 70% of Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. The theme for this year’s, World Diabetes Day on November 14, highlights women and diabetes.

In order to help address the rising prevalence of Diabetes, there is the need for public education and sensitization. This situation calls for action from different stakeholders to help address the issue. As a company, Nestlé works with different organisations and partners within our value chain, in order to help address nutrition related challenges.

Encouraging healthier lifestyles

One of Nestlé’s long-term ambitions is to enable healthier and happier lives for individuals and families. This forms part of our company’s purpose of “enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future”. By inspiring people to lead healthier lives, offering them healthier food choices and sharing nutrition knowledge, we believe we can help tackle some nutrition related challenges such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Nestlé in Central and West Africa is helping to address NCDs like diabetes by promoting healthy cooking, eating and lifestyles , aiming to double the outreach of our efforts for individuals and families by 2020. We provide different education platforms across the region through cooking caravans, women forums that focus on health cooking and healthy diets.

Our company is also committed to reducing sugar, salt and fat as a way of providing healthier and tastier choices. By reducing sugars in our products, we can improve health outcome and help decrease non-communicable diseases.

To empower people to make informed and healthy food choices, we provide clear information about ingredients and nutritional benefits on all our packaging. We strive to ensure that our labelling is fully accurate and declares, where applicable, the absence of a nutrient or ingredient that a consumer might wish to avoid, such as sugars.

Supporting healthy lifestyles in children

About 82,000 children and 1,200 teachers are benefiting from learning about healthy lifestyles through our Nestlé for Healthier Kids nutrition education programme, where we are working with partners, universities and Ministries of Health and Education in the region. Already up and running in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire , Ghana , Nigeria and Senegal , we aim to reach 100,000 children across the region by 2018. These efforts form part of our global commitments to enable 50 million children lead healthier lives. We do this by empowering parents, caregivers and teachers to foster healthier behaviours, and promote physical activity in children.

Our commitments in this regard, help to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals linked to ensuring healthier lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages.
