Nestlé Ghana recognized for Creating Shared Value

Nestlé Ghana was announced the winner of the coveted Ghana CSR Awards for its Creating Shared Value (CSV) initiatives at a ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra, on the 8th May 2014.

Creating Shared Value as a core business strategy
Nestlé’s Creating Shared Value was recognized as a sustainable way of doing business in line with the objective for which the Awards were instituted.

“CSV is embedded in the core business strategy of the company as a way of doing business with integrity, going beyond sustainability and compliance”, said Aaron Fenu, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Nestlé Ghana.

The Company commits to create value along the entire value chain, for both its shareholders as well as for the communities they engage with, employees, suppliers and society.

This is different to philanthropy or Public Relations ethics. It is a business model for engaging a sustainable future and for ensuring profitability for business and sustainable growth for society.

Nestlé Ghana was awarded for its Nestlé Healthy Kids programme, Nestlé Cocoa Plan and the Nestlé Grains Quality Improvement project.

Healthy Kids is a global programme aiming to promote nutrition education, good nutritional practices, healthy lifestyles and physical activity amongst school children. It has been running in Ghana since 2011.

The Nestlé Grains Quality Improvement project trains farmers in Northern Ghana on techniques to improve the quality and quantity of the grains and cereals they produce.

2014 Awards Ceremony
Present at the event were members from government agencies, industry, the media, civil society, and non-profit organizations, including JICA, Ghana Chamber of Commerce, the BBC and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI).

In addition to Nestlé Ghana, Stanbic Bank, MTN, OLAM, Fan Milk, and Huawei were also recognized.
The CSR activities of these companies have been published in the Ghana CSR Diary, Ghana’s only free CSR magazine, widely distributed to the media, business executives, companies, government agencies, international development agencies, selected school libraries and civil society organizations.

Origin of the Awards
The Ghana CSR Diary and Awards were launched in 2011 by the former Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon. Hanna Tetteh, and the former President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Nana Owusu-Afari, to reward CSR initiatives implemented by corporate organizations across the country.

According to Nana Owusu-Afari, the aim is to encourage companies to be socially responsible and to ensure that CSR is embedded as an integral part of their businesses. The Awards comes at a time when the Ministry of Trade & Industry is considering a CSR Policy for companies in Ghana.

The Awards are endorsed by the AGI, the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Integriti PR and many local and international media organizations across the West African sub-region

Nestlé’s Creating Shared Value was recognized as a sustainable initiative in line with the objective for which the Awards were instituted.

In the past CSR awards, Vodafone Ghana, Samsung Ghana, Millicom, Wire Weaving Industries, Interplast, SC Johnson, Goldman Capital, Mohinani Group, Latex Foam, Ghandour Cosmetics, PMMC and a few others were awarded for their impact-driven CSR projects.
