Water Quality Handbook
Water can look clear, taste normal and still be unsafe.
The quality of the water we drink and use every day is shaped by much more than what we can see. Microorganisms, chemicals, heavy metals, poor handling, damaged infrastructure and even changing weather conditions can affect water quality, sometimes without obvious warning.
Understanding those risks is the starting point for protecting ourselves and our communities.
The Water Quality Handbook, developed in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, OPS-WASH and other water quality experts as part of Nestlé Nigeria’s Water Quality Advocacy Campaign, brings practical, expert-informed water-quality knowledge together in one accessible resource.
Grounded in Nigerian realities and established water-quality principles, the handbook follows water from source to point of use. Across ten practical chapters, readers can learn why water that appears clean may still contain invisible contaminants; understand the risks associated with boreholes, wells, springs, piped water and rainwater; discover how water can become contaminated during collection, transportation and storage; and explore practical approaches to water testing, household treatment and safe storage.
It also looks at how floods, drought, rising temperatures and seasonal changes can affect water quality, while explaining the roles households, communities, government and partners can play in protecting this shared resource.
Who is it for?
The handbook is designed for anyone who uses, manages, provides or helps protect water — from individuals and families to community leaders, educators, WASH practitioners, policymakers and other stakeholders.
At its heart is a simple but important idea: access to water is only part of the equation. The quality of that water matters too.
For Nestlé Nigeria, the Water Quality Advocacy Campaign reflects the responsibility that comes with our longstanding relationship with water, as a shared natural resource, an essential part of healthy communities and an important part of our business. By working with relevant institutions and experts to make practical water-quality knowledge more accessible, we hope to contribute to better-informed choices, stronger community action and a deeper understanding of our shared responsibility to protect water quality.
The Water Quality Handbook is available as a free resource. Download your copy and discover the practical steps you can take to help protect water quality — at home, at work and in your community.
