Vice-President of Ghana, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, hosted the 20 winners of this year’s MILO Independence Day Award for basic school students in Ghana at the Flagstaff House, the seat of government in Accra.
The President's Independence Day Award was instituted in 1993 to award scholarship to deserving Basic Education Certificate Examination graduands.
Originally, ten students from each of the ten administrative regions of Ghana were awarded, but the figures were
revised in 2001 following a request from the Ghana Education Service to bring parity in the awards, reserving 10 quota each for girls and boys.
Among the goals of the scheme is to reward academic excellence, promote the participation of students in co-curricular activities and to reward good moral conduct.
Nestlé MILO® has been the lead sponsor of the prestigious award for the past 10 years.
The Ghanaian Vice-President exhorted the awardees to be diligent with their studies and not to relent in their efforts to succeed.
They were accompanied to the Flagstaff House by the Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, their teachers as well as officials of the Ghana Education Service.
